Acute imaging contrast reactions costing hospitals big bucks - Radiology Business

A study from the Mayo Clinic highlights the significant financial impact of acute contrast reactions in radiology departments. These reactions, which occur after the administration of imaging agents for scans like CT and MRI, were found to affect workflow and resource allocation. The study analyzed data over five years, reviewing nearly 364,000 CT and 254,000 MRI exams, resulting in over 1,100 acute iodinated reactions and more than 500 gadolinium reactions. While the median costs for treating these reactions were relatively low (around $15 for CT and $1.66 for MRI), they could escalate dramatically with the severity of the reaction, reaching up to $238,000 for serious cases. The study concluded that these adverse events lead to increased medical costs and workflow delays, emphasizing the need for healthcare decision-makers to consider these factors in operational planning. The findings were published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.
